The transition from student to skillful and confident professional is integral to the success of University of Virginia’s School of Data Science (SDS) graduates. We are seeking an enthusiastic, dedicated, and student-centered career development practitioner to complement our career coaching team. This individual will serve as a Career Advisor on the Career Services team within the Office of Student Affairs at the School of Data Science.
The Career Advisor will focus on direct service and provide career guidance, professional development, and opportunity search assistance to students and recent graduates. The SDS Career Advisor will play a critical role in helping students and recent alumni articulate and realize their individual career and professional aspirations. They will partner with undergraduate and graduate students to offer strategies, resources and connections that support individual career priorities. The Career Advisor will educate students on the realities of the current hiring landscape. They will also assist students in developing career readiness skills critical for the effective transition from school to career and beyond, to build a foundation for life-long career development and agility.
General Responsibilities:
Career Advising and Professional Development (60%) ▪ Offer individual, drop in and group career advising (virtually or in-person) including career exploration, decision making, navigating workplace transitions, and leveraging life design in career development. ▪ Deliver undergraduate and graduate student advising in support of all stages of career development including topics like career choices, internship/job readiness, resume writing, industry and employer research, interviewing skills, networking, job search strategies, and graduate school preparation. ▪ Leverage professional certifications (e.g., MBTI, Gallup Clifton Strengths, etc.) and conduct related trainings and assessments for students who are exploring career paths. ▪ Connect with newly admitted students to engage early in the career development process. ▪ Participate in self-directed industry education and professional development.
Programming and Projects (30%) ▪ Develop strategic partnerships with student councils, SDS faculty and alumni in service to career education. ▪ Leverage or innovate new career resources as gaps are identified; facilitate engaging career workshops. ▪ Support orientation programs and other anchor SDS events. ▪ Conduct continuous assessment of programs to determine student learning outcomes and program effectiveness. ▪ Support career mentorship-related initiatives (both peer and alumni based).
Data Collection and Reporting (10%) ▪ Along with other coaches, track career-related outcomes data and support student related questions regarding the Beyond Hoos platform. ▪ Support the Associate Director of Career Connections and Community Engagement’s efforts to track alumni career related and mentorship data. Qualifications: Required ▪ Master’s degree in counseling, higher education, organizational development, or a related industry focus with least 3 years of related experience in career development.
Preferred ▪ Experience with one-on-one career coaching and leading career workshops. ▪ Experience planning events and working with multiple stakeholders. ▪ Comfort with advising various career development levels (undergraduate students to senior-level executives). ▪ Knowledge of data science and analytics careers. ▪ Ability to manage multiple projects (multi-task), solid planning and organizational skills and a high degree of quality and attention to detail. ▪ Exhibit a genuine passion for helping students develop personally and professionally. ▪ Comfortable with, and able to address, the emotional needs and stresses of highly driven students in different stages of their professional journey. ▪ Experience with Handshake, Qualtrics, Zoom, Microsoft Teams. ▪ Knowledge of Microsoft Word, Excel, and Outlook. ▪ Flexibility to work occasional evenings or weekends as dictated by program schedules or student demand.
