The Child Life Assistant (CLA) supports the Child Life team in delivering developmentally appropriate, patient- and family- centered care to pediatric patients. Working collaboratively with Certified Child Life Specialists and other healthcare professionals, the CLA addresses the developmental and psychosocial needs of children through play, engagement and supportive activities. This role ensures consistent access to opportunities for normalization and socialization within the hospital setting enhancing the overall patient and family experience.

  • Facilitate individual and group play sessions to promote normalization of the hospital environment
  • Maintain and organize playrooms, activity areas, and bedside activities
  • Oversee cleaning of playrooms, toys, supplies and materials in accordance with infection control policies
  • Assist with the planning and implementation of special events, celebrations and donations
  • Collaborate with volunteers to support playroom activities, special events, and patient engagement, ensuring a safe and welcoming environment
  • Escort patients to and from activity areas as needed
  • Support Child Life Team with non-clinical tasks
  • Collaborate with interdisciplinary team members to support holistic care
  • Establishes relationships with team members and families that reflect the key elements of family-centered care and the principles of the Child Life Department
  • Treats pediatric patients, families and UVA Health Team Members with dignity and respect
  • Meets training requirements on an annual basis.
  • In addition to the above job responsibilities, other duties may be assigned.
Position Compensation Range: $15.99 - $24.78 Hourly

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS

Education: Associate’s Degree in child development or related field.

Experience: Previous experience working with children required.

Licensure: American Heart Association (AHA) Health Care Provider BLS certification required within 90 days of hire.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

Job requires standing for prolonged periods, frequently bending/stooping. Proficient communicative, auditory and visual skills; Attention to detail and ability to write legibly; Ability to lift/push/pull 20 - 50lbs. May be exposed to noise, blood/body fluids and infectious disease.
