Job Description

Are you looking for a challenge that offers fulfillment and the chance to impact the next generation of veterinarians while practicing high-quality, evidence-based medicine supported by a team of specialists? Consider joining the Emergency and Critical Care team at Virginia Tech.

The Department of Small Animal Clinical Sciences at the Virginia-Maryland College of Veterinary Medicine (VMCVM) is seeking a full-time emergency veterinarian. This position is a Clinical Instructor appointment with expectations of clinical teaching and primary case responsibility, as well as a limited amount of classroom and laboratory instruction.

The Emergency & Critical Care Service (ECC) is a rapidly growing service at the VMCVM with three criticalists (a fourth criticalist position is open and actively being filled), four emergency veterinarians, and seven rotating interns with support by a highly experienced, qualified team of veterinary technicians. The VMCVM fosters a collaborative culture with opportunities to work with and learn from specialists in neurology, internal medicine, soft tissue and orthopedic surgery, cardiology, medical, surgical and radiation oncology, dermatology, ophthalmology, diagnostic imaging, anesthesia and primary care.

The experienced emergency clinician in this role will be expected to oversee the clinical education of veterinary students and interns during their ECC rotations. Oversight of timely, accurate triage and outpatient care for all cases arriving on emergency with primary case responsibility for ~50% of cases that are presented, dependent upon caseload and complexity. Inpatient care through oversight of interns, collaboration with criticalists, and occasionally primary care dependent on case load should be expected. Support from a criticalist is dependably available through consultation and co-management of cases. Day and swing shifts are expected, with occasional on-call/back-up shifts to support interns during their overnight shifts.
