Job Description

Deputy Commandant of Cadets, Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University (Virginia Tech)

The Deputy Commandant of Cadets reports to the Vice Commandant and is responsible for providing leadership and oversight to a full time Corps of Cadets. The Corps of Cadets was established in 1872. The Virginia Tech 1,000 plus member Corps of Cadets offers student cadets invaluable opportunities for superior leadership training and individual and career development. Virginia Tech is the first land-grant university in the nation to combine the leader development curriculum of a Corps experience with academic coursework in leadership to award a minor in leadership studies.

Core Responsibilities:
- In collaboration with Vice Commandant and other Deputy Commandants, establishes and implements short- and long-range organizational goals, objectives, strategic plans; program development, implementation and evaluation; policy review and development; and operating procedures. Monitors and evaluates programmatic and operational effectiveness that includes staffing and budget; effects changes required for improvement.
- Develop general knowledge of all departmental functions and processes in order to serve as resource to others. Ensures compliance with state and university policies in department operations.
- Lead professional and student staff in developing supportive and multicultural environments through community development and educational programming.
- Develop and implement programs and services to achieve the Corps’ mission “to graduate leaders of character who are instilled with the values and skills essential for leadership success in service to the nation.”
- Guide student development in skills required for success as leaders, academic excellence, cultural awareness, self-responsibility and social interaction. Provide appropriate counseling and referral for individual students and staff when needed.
- Cultivate on- and off-campus relationships and partnering efforts that facilitate the achievement of institutional Corps’ goals and objectives. Participate in Corps’ recruitment and retention initiatives.
- Oversees recruitment, training, supervision, professional development and evaluation of assigned cadet leaders and staffs.
- Provide leadership in the planning and execution of conferences, meetings, special events and projects as assigned.
- Serve on assigned departmental and University committees and participate in other professional development opportunities; provide leadership for one or more departmental committee assignments.
- Perform other job-related duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications

- Master’s Degree
- Prior military experience as a commissioned officer, such as in the grade of O-4, O-5 or O-6
- Experience in creating and implementing programs
- Experience in the effective supervision of staff and students
- Demonstrated commitment to diversity
- Strong oral and written communications skills to include instructional and presentation experience
- Collaborative work style
- Ability to work effectively with all university constituents

Preferred Qualifications

- Military command experience
- Experience with a senior military college or federal service academy with recent active service
- Previous experience with a ROTC program and/or graduates of the Virginia Tech Corps of Cadets
