About the Program:

In 2013, VCU School of Medicine’s Department of Healthcare Policy and Research (HCPR) and the Global Education Office launched a postdoctoral training - VCU-Bolashak International Scholarship Program (BISP) - for scholars from Kazakhstan. Led by Dr. Askar Chukmaitov, now with VCU’s School of Public Health, the program is funded by Kazakhstan’s Bolashak Center for International Programs. Scholars, including clinicians, policymakers, and researchers, gain expertise to support Kazakhstan’s health reforms. Scholars engage in up to 10 months of interdisciplinary, mentored training tailored to their interests, focusing on clinical disciplines, health policy, and research. Scholars complete training in a chosen concentration, participate in seminars and site visits, and develop a capstone project, research proposal, or academic manuscript. They are expected to submit a final report and share their expertise upon returning to Kazakhstan.
