VDOT is seeking qualified Equipment Repair Technicians for our Bristol District Equipment Repair Shop. We are hiring for multiple positions to repair both light and heavy-duty equipment. Successful candidates will be experienced in Diesel Truck and Heavy Equipment Mechanics while promoting and practicing safe work habits. Technicians will perform diagnosis, repair, maintenance, and rebuilding tasks on light, medium, and heavy-duty equipment.
Medium and heavy equipment includes diesel trucks and road construction/maintenance equipment (backhoes, single axle/tandem dump trucks, graders, loaders, spreaders, and snowplows), along with their associated hydraulic systems (hoses, pumps, and valves) and electrical components. Light-duty equipment will include cars, SUVs, and pickups.
In this role you will:
Use specialized equipment and tools such as laptop-based diagnostic equipment, digital multimeters, and handheld scan tools.
Diagnose and repair gas and diesel engines, engine fuel systems, cooling systems, differentials, transmissions, A/C, pneumatic, hydraulic, and electrical systems.
Perform heating, cutting, welding, and fabrication of components.
Perform safety inspections under the guidelines of the Virginia State Police Inspection Program for vehicles and equipment.
Perform preventive maintenance on vehicles and equipment according to the PM schedule and guidelines. Make repairs as needed when deficiencies are found or recommend outsourcing.
Design, fabricate, modify, and weld components to repair, rebuild, or replace parts.
Prepare equipment for emergency operations. Make equipment repairs to reduce downtime during emergency operations, including on-the-road repairs.
Prepare, process, and maintain required maintenance and repair documentation. Generate, complete, and close out work orders in the computer system. Perform time and leave entry. Prepare parts requests. Complete paperwork for warranty inspections and repairs.

Minimum Qualifications
- Knowledge of the diagnosis, repair and maintenance of automotive, construction and maintenance equipment. - Knowledge of cutting, welding and fabrication operations. - Ability to operate various types of light, medium and heavy-duty trucks, equipment and tools in a safe and efficient manner. - Ability to independently perform major repairs and maintenance on a variety of diesel and gasoline trucks and equipment. - Ability to read and comprehend service and equipment repair manuals, gauges and testing devices. - Ability to perform heavy manual labor. - Ability to maintain accurate records and reports - Skill in the use of computers, hand and power tools and advanced electronic and computerized diagnostic equipment. - Ability to obtain CDL and DOT medical card within 11 months of employment and maintain thereafter. Must comply with DOT and VDOT policies and standards when operating CDL equipment. - Safety shoes required.
Additional Considerations
- Experience repairing and maintaining a variety of automotive and construction equipment. - Experience using cutting and welding equipment. - Ability to obtain Virginia State Inspection License - ASE certifications
