The Library Service and Collections Assistant position reports to the Head of Library Engagement and User Experience and the Health Sciences Collections Librarian at the Health Sciences Library, and works with library employees to provide excellent customer service and accurate inventory processing. This position works in the HSL Library Engagement and User Experience (LEUX) department (.5 FTE) and provides support to the HSL Collection Management team (.5 FTE). The successful applicant will be expected to deliver excellent customer service, produce highly accurate work, and have knowledge of library resources and policies. General responsibilities are included but not limited to:

  • Staff the service desk as scheduled, approximately 16 hours per week.
  • Circulate library materials using Alma, VCU Libraries’ Integrated Library System.
  • Educate patrons on how to access and effectively use library resources and equipment.
  • Maintain working knowledge of VCU Libraries research tools, services, policies and practices.
  • Open and occasionally close the library; prepare the space for the day.
  • Process fines and fees.
  • Work on journal- and book-related projects, approximately 20 hours a week.
  • Collect data on print and electronic journal holdings.
  • Inventory, shift, and reshelve journals and books as required.
  • Provide support for collections maintenance.
  • Monitor the library building, report facility or technology problems quickly and accurately.
  • Assist in operating the large format poster and 3D object printing services.
  • Assist in training patrons and staff in the use of library technology and equipment.
  • Share your skills in 3D printing, virtual/augmented reality, and audio/video production to provide assistance in the library makerspace.
  • Enhance technical skills to serve a developing makerspace environment.


While located primarily on the MCV campus, this position may involve occasional travel between the Monroe Park and MCV campuses. Normal work days are currently Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m but could occasionally include a weekend day depending on normal staffing availability. Work schedule may adjust to fit the business needs of the library. Must be able to work in an environment which may include exposure to dust or mold. Requires occasional lifting and moving items that weigh up to 50 pounds.
