Lab and Research Tech 1 (Beenhakker Lab)

The Department of Pharmacology at the University of Virginia seeks a Lab/Research Tech 1 to facilitate with research in neuroscience within the Laboratory of Dr. Beenhakker. The successful candidate will provide experimental support for research projects, engage in scientific experimentation, and undertake administrative responsibilities essential for the Beenhakker Lab.

Responsibilities

Laboratory/Research Tasks:

• Perform EEG electrophysiological experiments.
• Help manage a mouse colony consisting of 2-5 transgenic lines.
• Conduct stereotaxic surgeries for viral injections.
• Learn and analyze basic optical imaging and electrophysiological experiments.
• Perform basic immunohistology procedures.

Managerial Tasks:

• Ensure cleanliness and organization of the laboratory space.
• Maintain equipment in working condition and manage stock of materials.
• Process purchases and liaise with vendors for procurement purposes.
• Supervise multiple lab members and oversee complex laboratory activities.
• Ensure compliance with established practices and operational standards.
• Train lab members and enforce adherence to laboratory protocols.
• Manage and coordinate research projects within the lab.
• Provide advice on technical procedures and equipment.
• Represent the lab in interactions with university committees.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS

Education: High school diploma or equivalent

Experience: At least 1 year of lab experience, which may include student experience. Bachelor's degree will be considered in lieu of experience.

Preferred Qualifications:

• Bachelor's degree in a relevant field (e.g., neuroscience, biology, pharmacology).
• Experience with animal handling.
• Experience with behavioral tasks, stereotaxic surgeries, and immunohistology.
• Strong organizational and managerial skills.
• Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a fast-paced research environment.
• Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
• Prior experience in laboratory management or supervision is desirable.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

This position can spend extensive periods of time standing and squatting while conducting experiments or caring for animals. Also requires keyboarding and other bench work and animal procedures requiring finer finger manipulation.
