Job Duties

Hourly/wage positions are not entitled to the State’s benefits package. Positions
filled through this recruitment are limited to an average of 29 hours per week and
1,500 hours in a 12-month period.

VDOT’s Culpeper District’s Traffic Section is seeking to fill a Sign Crew
member vacancy to serve Culpeper County areas and is located at our Culpeper District Complex. We are seeking safety conscious individuals interested in joining our team who are able to operate power tools and light to heavy equipment. Install, maintain, repair and remove roadway signs and traffic control devices for assigned area(s). Perform a combination of skilled equipment operations,
preventive maintenance and manual labor tasks in roadway maintenance.

As a sign operator, you will:

• Install, maintain, repair and remove roadway signs and traffic control devices
• Assist in tracking sign inventory and maintaining records.
• Respond to emergency roadway and severe weather events to prepare and operate
equipment for snow and ice removal and other types of hazardous road conditions
• Attend work zone training, prepare work zones and perform traffic control
• Demonstrate proper work site protection techniques: identify workplace safety hazards,
make suggestions for improvement, wear proper personal protection equipment,
maintain current knowledge of safety rules, regulations, laws and use equipment
properly and safely
• Complete pre-trip inspections, perform preventive maintenance and operate power
tools and light to heavy equipment.

Minimum Qualifications

• Skill in the operation and maintenance of hand-held and power tools.

• Valid driver's license.

• Ability to perform heavy manual labor.

• Knowledge of highway maintenance equipment, materials, methods, and procedures.

• Ability to read and follow oral and written instructions.

• Skill in the operation and maintenance of light and medium equipment used for highway maintenance and repair.

Additional Considerations

• Experience performing roadway maintenance or construction activities.

• Experience with emergency operations to include snow removal, storms, and accident clean-up.

• A combination of training, experience, or education in Equipment Repair, Construction, Maintenance, or related field desired.

• Skill in equipment operation and performing preventive maintenance.
