The Office of the Executive Vice President and Provost at the University of Virginia seek s applications for a Managing Director of Online Education to join the Office of the Vice Provost for Online Education and Digital Innovation (VP-OEDI) .
Reporting directly to the V P-OEDI, this position is a key leadership role with the focus of supporting and advancing the University’s online and digital education strategy, helping to realize UVA’s vision for online education in alignment with our position as one of the nation’s leading public research universities . This includes partner ing with the twelve schools at the University , UVA|Northern Virg inia , university institutes and centers , and other key stakeholders to help develop and deliver online , hybrid, and digitally-mediated programs aligned to strategic goals . This effort include s innovative learning opportunities of varied format and length - both credit-bearing and non-credit credential programs - that will serve the needs of employers and lifelong learners.
The 2030 Plan calls on the University to expand the reach of its educational programs-both in person and online-and to make UVA more accessible, including to adult learners across and beyond the Commonwealth.
The successful candidate will be expected to manage a combination of program design and development, operational oversight , and academic administration function s . Responsibilities include:
Help recruit and lead a growing, high performing team and p rovide day-to-day direction of the office and staff
Facilitate the implementation of strategic , highly visible and innovative program s in close partnership with deans, directors, and other academic leaders
Help implement program strategies and goals, direct long-term planning, develop policies and procedures, and manage data strategy and reporting processes, ensuring compliance with internal and external governance and accreditation requirements
Develop and maintain process tracking documentation and playbook s for communicating design and process intent
Evaluate operations and outcomes to ensure alignment with organizational goals
Provide oversight and manage relationships between the VP-OEDI team, internal stakeholders, partners, and vendors to ensure accountability and efficiency
Work closely with the Center for Teaching Excellence , ITS, and other groups and professionals to advance uses of technology for teaching and learning, in online , hybrid and in-person modalities
Promote coordination and collaboration in digital learning initiatives on a pan-University basis
In addition to the above job responsibilities, other duties may be assigned
Qualifications:
A master's degree with at least ten years of relevant experience is required . Of this at least five years of development, management, and operations of online post-secondary education programs serving adult learners experience is required .
A bachelor’s degree with additional experience will be considered in lieu of advanced degree
A successful track record of managing the full spectrum of online program design , development, launch, and operations including market research, marketing, enrollment, curriculum development, and student supports for online and hybrid programs - whether within an academic setting or with an online program manager (OPM)
Knowledge of trends in technology and higher education and current research on digital teaching and learning as well as knowledge of digital teaching and learning tools and emerging systems for delivering digital ly-mediated education
Leadership skills appropriate for growing and overseeing a team responsible for innovative program design and delivery
Demonstrated ability to work effectively with individuals and groups at all levels within the University and ability to form collaborative academic partnerships
Experience vetting , managing, and establishing accountability measures with vendors
Experience supervising staff across complex work teams; excellent project management skills and use of metrics to identify resource needs and provide accountability
Demonstrated understanding of decision-making and persuasion within a research-intensive university environment and the ability to solve complex problems in conjunction with stakeholders
Excellent written, verbal and presentation skills
College or university teaching experience (especially in online and hybrid settings) or experience working closely with faculty on unbundled, stackable, online and digital education projects and ability to generate faculty enthusiasm for, and engagement in, online, hybrid, and digitally-mediated formats for teaching and learning
This position is primarily In-Person in Charlottesville, VA . The possibility of hybrid work arrangements may be avai lable .
