Summary:

The Marketing and Communication Assistant uses visual and written communication to inform, engage, and motivate fellow students and other stakeholders to action. This position assists in implementing the VCU Division of Student Affairs’ strategic marketing plan.

The Marketing and Communication Assistant reports to the Director of Communications or other designated manager in the Division of Student Affairs Communications and Marketing Office.
The Marketing and Communication Assistant maintains a consistent and professional image for VCU Division of Student Affairs by creating quality imagery, copywriting/editing, promotional communication, and effective social media marketing concepts. They ensure all marketing messages and activities are in keeping with DSA’s pillars, mission, vision, and values, as well as the university, Division, and client department branding. Creates communications and marketing materials for the division and its departments.

Responsibilities:
  • Visual Media Planning and Implementation:
  • Create original visual media to promote DSA programs, facilities, events, and activities.
  • Collaborate with other Central Communications team members to create content appropriate to each promotion.
  • Visual outputs include, but are not limited to: layouts for print publications; illustrations; graphics and animations for digital displays, social media, promotional items, facility signage, mobile displays, advertising, and mobile apps.
  • Assist with photography/videography of DSA programs, facilities, events, and activities as needed.
  • Edit and upload completed content according to a production schedule.

Communication Planning and Implementation:
  • Write original promotional copy, including, but not limited to, social media, articles, blog posts, and press releases.
  • Use analytics to provide feedback regarding online audience engagement and the effectiveness of marketing campaigns.
  • Apply knowledge of VCU Division of Student Affairs programming, activities, and facilities to inform our audience of the benefits of engagement.
  • Maintain a timely production schedule of all projects using team-based project management systems.
  • Actively participate in Communications team staff meetings, group chats, Slack channel.
  • Manage personal weekly project workflow and deadlines.
  • Other duties as assigned.
  • Position is located in a non-smoking work area.
  • This is a project-based position, and hours worked will be tied to specific projects.
  • Hours per week may vary, but on average, the position will work 3-5 hours/week to start.
  • The following date ranges will have no hours to work available due to projects being paused during these date ranges:
  • Nov 24 thru Nov 30
  • Dec 1t thru Jan 11

Qualifications:
  • Bachelor's degree in graphic design, communication arts, mass communication, marketing, or a related field or relevant working experience.
  • Strong writing, graphic design, illustration, photography, and/or videography skills as demonstrated through a portfolio of work.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Experience creating content for social media.
  • Familiarity with social media platforms, trends, and best practices.
  • Demonstrated experience working in and fostering a diverse faculty, staff, and student environment or commitment to do so as a member of the VCU community.
  • Familiarity with the VCU Division of Student Affairs programming, activities, and facilities to inform our audience of the benefits of engagement.
  • Experience with Adobe Creative Cloud (InDesign, Photoshop, Illustrator, Premiere, After Effects)
  • Strong verbal communication, organizational, problem-solving and planning skills.
    Must be people-focused and dedicated to excellent customer service.
  • Ability to work as part of a team and work independently.
  • Available to work a combination of weekday, evening, and/or weekend hours, dependent on program needs

Preferred Qualifications:
  • Experience developing content for promotional purposes.
  • Experience managing a social media content calendar
  • Experience with social media management tools (such as Hootsuite or Sprout Social), Canva, and project management software.
  • Proven ability to operate a DSLR camera

SALARY: $16.83/hr to start. This is a non-exempt, non-benefited position.
