The University of Virginia Library invites applications for a Night Manager of The Edgar Shannon Library to support the Information Services and Spaces team. The Information Services and Spaces team provides our patrons with access to collections, resources, and spaces as well as high-quality service to support them.

Working in the Information Services and Spaces (ISS) team, this detail-oriented position provides management of the Main Library during the evening operating hours. This position oversees and supervises student workers at both Main Library service desks in support of patron services. The incumbent will also provide direct patron services during the evening hours. This position reports to the Shannon Library Public Services Manager. The Night Manager will work an alternate work schedule from Sunday through Thursday nights, from 6pm to 2am.

What you will do:

Night building management
  • Oversees Main Library operations at night. Conducts preventative patrols. Contacts University police and Facilities Management as needed, to ensure safety, security, and comfort of library patrons. Reports incidents to supervisor and other library staff. Communicates relevant information to ISS and Main Library stakeholders as appropriate. Always uses sound, responsible judgment.
  • Troubleshoots basic problems with desktop computing, printing/copying service, classroom audio/video, and reports unresolved issues to appropriate staff. Initiates help requests within and outside the library.
  • Monitors student employee performance at night. Handles any tasks that require staff-level authority. Works with Main Library Public Services Manager to align on expectations for student employees


Circulation Services
  • Circulates books, videos, and equipment to patrons. Grants exceptions to circulation policy when appropriate. Answers questions related circulation problems and patron accounts.
  • Performs quality-control work to maintain accuracy of hold shelf.
  • Locates books and videos missing in-transit.
  • Answers circulation email correspondence with patrons, when assigned by supervisor.
  • Pulls books from stacks for LEO requests.
  • Performs multiple daily tasks related to the maintenance of the hold shelf.
  • Completes regular checks of circulating equipment.
  • Checks multiple forms completed by student workers to ensure accuracy.

Reference and Customer Service
  • Conducts catalog searches to identify a variety of texts, access library resources, and locate specific materials for library patrons.
  • Provides customer service to library patrons with identifying and using appropriate library resources and online data collections.


ISS Teamwork and Special Duties
  • Works with other evening supervisors to ensure a consistent and high-quality library experience across libraries in the evenings.
  • Works with Information Services and Spaces team to coordinate circulation policies, procedures, and documentation (including adding to Public Services Wiki). Contributes to discussion of procedures and policies within ISS (e.g., staffing, hours).
  • Special duties as needed.

Required Qualifications:
  • Bachelor's degree. Relevant experience may be considered in lieu of a degree.
  • At least one year of library experience.


Preferred Qualifications:
  • A working understanding of library classification systems, like the Library of Congress Classification System.
  • Experience using library catalogs and databases.
  • Experience using integrated library systems and other library technology.
  • Experience working with student workers.
  • Experience working with the public or in a customer service position.
  • Demonstrated ability to work both independently and as part of a team.
  • Must be able to communicate verbally and in writing in a clear manner.
  • Must be able to provide service to library patrons (in person and via telephone) in a courteous, efficient manner.

Anticipated hiring range: $17.00 - $21.00 per hour, commensurate with education and experience.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

Ability to push a full book cart and lift 15 pounds. This is primarily a sedentary job involving extensive use of desktop computers. The job does occasionally require traveling some distance to attend meetings, and programs.
