Job Duties

The Science Museum of Virginia is currently seeking a dynamic and enthusiastic Part-Time Retail Generalist to join our Retail and Food Services team. In this role, you will serve guests at our Museum Store, Grab-and-Go Café, and Dome Concession Stand, providing excellent customer service and ensuring a seamless experience.


As a Retail Generalist, you will be an essential part of our team. Key responsibilities to include but are not limited to:

  • Welcoming museum guests and fostering a positive experience
  • Operating the cash register efficiently and processing various sales transactions in a fast-paced environment.
  • Restocking merchandise and creatively organizing displays to enhance the shopping experience.
  • Assisting with receiving, ticketing, and organizing inventory.
  • Performing opening and closing procedures as required.

This position requires flexibility in scheduling with availability to work, at minimum, four hour shifts between 9:00AM to 5:30PM. Weekday, weekend, holiday and occasional evening availability is required. Minimum Qualifications

An ideal candidate will possess considerable knowledge in specialty retail sales, direct customer service, heavy cash handling, and computerized register operation is required. Excellent communication skills and the ability to assess customers’ needs and suggest solutions to their questions. Be self-motivated, work well independently and as part of a team, enjoy working with children and be comfortable with crowds. The ability to perform basic math computations, work under pressure and strong attention to detail skills are essential. Candidate must be able to work weekdays, weekends and state, federal and local holidays and occasional evenings, be able to lift and carry supplies and equipment weighing up to 50 pounds or greater on a frequent basis, prolonged walking or standing, and frequent bending, stooping, kneeling, and reaching on a daily basis.

Additional Considerations

Experience in cash register daily reconciliation and experience in opening/closing procedures. An interest in science and food service experience is a plus. Spanish language proficiency and/or ASL also is a plus.
