Job Duties

Mount Rogers Health District is looking for a Public Health Outreach Worker-Interpreter to assist us with providing services to the Spanish speaking clients in our health district. The interpreter will assist with interpretation in a variety of clinic settings including family planning, immunizations, STI testing and treatment, car seat trainings, WIC programs and more.

Facilitates service delivery to clients in a health district or other direct service work unit by interpreting and translating language to staff and clients. Duties typically associated with overall service delivery are well defined and include obtaining patient history, providing basic health education, explaining various routine assessments, diagnostic and treatment processes and identifying other social or financial service providers to contact for assistance. Provides general administrative tasks and may serve as a lead in the following areas- manages Spanish language phone line, creates and manages interpreter schedule to provider in-person interpretation during for clinics and coaches internal/external interpreter staff. The position provides comprehensive case management with a focus on quality of patient outcomes utilizing local and health department referral services. May be responsible for coordinating interpreter clinic schedule coverage for appropriate programs. Provides car seat training as a certified Car Seat Trainer. Effectively provides cultural awareness to VDH staff. Supports TB, Family Planning, Sexually Transmitted Infections, WIC, Early Intervention, Immunization, etc.

Minimum Qualifications

• Bilingual English/Spanish (verbal and written); ability to work with ethnically diverse populations and at-risk families with multiple health needs; must be positive, exercising good and independent judgment in dealing with children and adults; ability to operate basic office equipment; ability to translate medical information correctly into vocabulary that the family can understand; remain within role boundaries, be accepting and non-judgmental in working with families
• Must be able to provide own transportation
• Must be able to obtain and maintain Car Seat certification
• TITLE X (Family planning) training is required annually
• Skill in interviewing, counseling, teaching and using audio-visual equipment is required
• Must be able to communicate effectively both orally and in writing

Additional Considerations

• Specific training in providing interpreter and translation services preferred
• Experience working with case management, translation, outreach worker preferred
