Medication Access Pharmacy Technician - Pharm Tech

The Medication Access Pharmacy Technician supports UVA Health’s Specialty Pharmacy mission by facilitating timely and accurate access to high-cost and complex therapies. This technician works closely with pharmacists, providers, patients, payers, and manufacturers to complete benefit investigations, prior authorizations, appeals, reauthorizations, and coordinate financial assistance resources including copay cards, foundations, and grant programs where applicable. The role helps ensure patients can start and maintain therapy without avoidable delays, contributing to high-quality patient care.

Key Responsibilities
Medication Access Coordination
• Conduct insurance benefit verifications and prior authorization submissions for specialty medications across multiple therapeutic areas.
• Monitor and document payer responses, and escalate complex access issues when needed.
• Facilitate patient onboarding and refill coordination, supporting continuity of care throughout the treatment journey.

Documentation & Compliance
• Accurately document all access activities within UVA Health systems, maintaining compliance with URAC, ACHC, and payer-specific accreditation standards.
• Ensure adherence to turnaround times, documentation protocols, and warm handoff expectations per standard operating procedures.

Financial Assistance Support
• Assist patients in accessing available financial support options including copay assistance, grants, foundations, and manufacturer programs.
• Communicate with external support programs and maintain timely follow-up to minimize out-of-pocket patient burden.

Collaboration & Communication
• Collaborate with pharmacists, clinic teams, payers, and patient support programs to address medication access barriers.
• Provide clear and empathetic communication with patients regarding the status of their medication access journey.

Performance & Quality
• Support high-quality service delivery by adhering to UVA Health’s documentation, service, and compliance standards.
• Contribute to positive provider and patient experiences, supporting UVA Health’s Specialty Pharmacy Net Promoter Score (NPS) goals.

  • Demonstrates the ability to competently work in general and specialized areas of pharmacy practice.
  • Participates in the training of new employees.
  • Fills and delivers medications under the supervision of a licensed pharmacist/licensed independent practitioner.
  • Policies and procedures are followed consistently.
  • Ensures adequate supplies are available for continuous patient care.
  • Triages and escalates any questions or issues outside the pharmacy technician scope of practice to the staff pharmacist or supervisor as needed.
  • Uses appropriate systems for processing of patient information.
  • Ensures quality assurance is maintained according to departmental and legal requirements.
  • Operates pharmacy equipment appropriately.
  • In addition to the above job responsibilities, other duties may be assigned.
Position Compensation Range: -

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS

Education: High School Graduate or Equivalent
Experience: 6 months minimum relevant experience required
License/Certification: Commonwealth of Virginia Pharmacy Technician Registration required. CPhT credential through National Healthcareer Association (NHA) or Pharmacy Technician Certification Board (PTCB) required. For team members hired prior to February 1, 2020, certification as CPhT through NHA or PTCB is required by January 31, 2022.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

Job requires standing for prolonged periods. Proficient communicative, auditory and visual skills; Attention to detail and ability to write legibly; Ability to lift/push/pull less than 20lbs.
