The Center for Public Health Genomics at the University of Virginia invites applications for a postdoctoral research associate position in the Onengut Lab.

This position is funded by an R01 grant from the NIDDK and focuses on investigating the role that T1D risk variants play in islet autoimmunity through advanced single-cell techniques. The lab seeks an independent, highly motivated PhD-level scientist with a strong background in single-cell genomic data biology and analysis to contribute to this important work.

The successful candidate will work on uncovering pathways that drive susceptibility to type 1 diabetes (T1D). The Onengut Lab integrates genetics, molecular biology, and bioinformatics to investigate how genomic loci linked to T1D contribute to disease mechanisms at the molecular level and within broader gene networks regulating islet autoimmunity. This project involves generating data from longitudinally collected human peripheral blood mononuclear cells at the single-cell level (CITE-seq) across individuals.

This is a unique opportunity for a motivated scientist to join the Onengut Lab in investigating autoimmune mechanisms in T1D through innovative genomic research.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Implement computational approaches to analyze and integrate genomic data, inclduing whole genome sequencing, single-cell RNA-seq, and single-cell cell surface protein-seq (CITE-seq).
  • Utilize an array of computational approaches to understand the role T1D risk variants play in the initiation and progression of autoimmunity.
  • Collaborate with a multidisciplinary team to advance our understanding of autoimmune disorders.
  • Communicate findings to the scientific community through conference presentations and publications.

Preferred Qualifications:
  • PhD in Computational Biology, Bioinformatics, Genetics, or a related field, with a strong foundation in data analysis.
  • Expertise in human biology, single-cell genomics, and computational biology to lead research efforts within this project.
  • Experience with single-cell RNA-seq, CITE-seq, and/or multiome-sequencing data, along with genomic data integration.
  • Interest in human genetics and autoimmune disorders.
  • Solid background in both programming and biology.
  • Strong communication skills and the ability to work both independently and collaboratively within a team.

Minimum Requirements:

Qualified candidates must have a PhD by the appointment start date.

This position will sponsor applicants for work visa who meet the qualifications.

This is a 12-month appointment with the possibility of renewal contingent upon satisfactory performance and the availability of funding. Salary is commensurate with education and experience.
