Central State Hospital (CSH) is a 277 bed Joint Commission accredited psychiatric inpatient facility located in Petersburg, Virginia. CSH has proudly been serving citizens of the Commonwealth since 1870, when we opened our doors as the first psychiatric hospital in the country dedicated to the treatment of African Americans. A new and modern CSH is currently under construction on the same property, with a scheduled completion date of January 2027.
CSH maintains the only maximum-security treatment facility in the state (111 beds). We also have 166 beds available for individuals in the community who need inpatient care, as well as individuals in the criminal justice system. We believe that treatment should be holistic and focused on the person’s individual needs, recognizing that recovery is not linear or the same for every person. Treatment modalities may include medication, evidence-based group and individual therapy, peer support, psychosocial rehabilitation, vocational training, preparation for court, and treatment for substance use.
Central State Hospital is recruiting for a Psychology Supervisor to provide supervision to psychology staff in CSH civil buildings and provide psychological services, assessment, psychosocial rehabilitation programming, and behavioral interventions for clients.
Job duties include, but are not limited to:
- Ensures staff receive frequent, constructive feedback, including interim evaluations as appropriate. - Ensures staff have the necessary knowledge, skills, and abilities to accomplish goals. - Ensures that the requirements of the performance planning and evaluation system are met, and evaluations are completed by established deadlines with proper documentation. - Ensures performance issues are addressed and documented as they occur in accordance with the Standards of Conduct. - Ensures that unsatisfactory attendance and punctuality are addressed and documented as they occur in accordance with the Attendance Policy and the Standards of Conduct. - Works to continuously improve safety in all areas and ensure that all tasks are carried out in a safe and efficient manner complying with established safety regulations; balancing quality, cost, and safety to achieve positive results. - Ensures that staff have completed all mandated training requirements unless otherwise documented. - Provides treatment team psychologist responsibilities, individual and group services. These responsibilities include attending treatment team meetings, providing individual and group services, psychotherapy/psychosocial rehabilitation, and assessments. Qualitative reviews will meet or exceed departmental standards. - Conducts psychological evaluations, to include the assessment of intellectual and cognitive abilities, personality dynamics, psychosis, and other areas of psychological functioning. These assessments include Initial Analysis of Risk Reports, Commissioner Appointed Evaluations, NGRI-related reports, etc. All assessments will be completed by the date assigned. Reviews and countersigns reports of supervisees as required. Qualitative reviews will meet or exceed standards. - Provides clinical direction and supervision to psychology staff assigned. - Assures the personnel provide satisfactory treatment and evaluation services. - Performs administrative supervisory duties, such as grants leave, evaluates performance and initiates discipline actions, when required. - Assumes responsibility for clinical supervision of non-licensed psychologist supervisees. - Supervision of interns and students as required. - Completes performance-monitoring tasks. - Supervisees will complete required duties as assigned. - Supervisees will complete all forensic evaluations by the assigned due date. - Supervisees will meet or exceed Qualitative review standards. - Exhibits professional demeanor when working with patients and provides a role model to direct care staff. - Demonstrates good negotiation skills in deescalating problematic patient behaviors. - Demonstrates a commitment to the use of least restrictive interventions per hospital policy through treatment planning and direct provision of treatment. - Demonstrates respect towards patients and staff through words and actions. - Demonstrates an awareness of and respect for coworker and individuals’ cultural background. - Provides periodic training of professional and direct care staff. - Consults with clinical disciplines on psychological matters. - Remains up-to-date on empirically supported, evidence based treatment and ensures that supervisees are practicing in accordance with best practice. - Completion of all mandatory training. - Maintains clinical competence
Minimum Qualifications
REQUIRED:
- Doctoral degree in Clinical Psychology or related field, and a current license (or ability to be licensed within 6 months of hire) as a Clinical Psychologist in the Commonwealth of Virginia. - Knowledge and experience providing individual and group therapy, psychological, and forensic assessments required.
Additional Considerations
PREFERRED:
- Previous supervisory experience and experience working in an inpatient setting with individuals with serious and persistent mental illness preferred.
- Previous experience as a clinical/forensic supervisor is preferred.
