Job Duties

Western State Hospital is seeking a full time Rehab Assistant to assist in the development, implementation, and evaluation of interventions within the psychosocial treatment program and to provide open leisure programming available to all patients of Western State Hospital; conduct 18-20 hours of psychosocial rehabilitation interventions per week, according to approved schedules; ensure that interventions are appropriate to individual patient’s ages, interests, and abilities as reflected by assessment data; and track patient attendance in the open leisure program.

The Rehab Assistant will also assist supervisor and open leisure staff in the planning, organizing, and implementing monthly special event programs and outings for the open leisure program; complete HOPS notes daily summarizing patient’s response to programming in PSR groups; document and update incident reports as well as initiates warnings and restrictions as needed in the common's areas; and drive van for leisure programming field trips.

Minimum Qualifications

- High school diploma or equivalent
- Valid Virginia Driver’s license
- Knowledge of the principles and practices of recreation activities
- Knowledge of recovery-focused treatment
- Computer skills, including Microsoft Office products
- Experience working in a team setting with a diverse population and experience working with a multi-disciplinary team
- Ability to plan and facilitate structured group activities and ability to manage clients in challenging social situations
- Knowledge of psychiatric disabilities, personality development and behaviors, recreational and activity programs and ability to involve patients in therapeutic activities
- Knowledge of various modalities; sports, fitness, wellness, social skills, music, and arts/crafts.

- College courses in psychology, recreational therapy, education, and/or a related field or equivalent experience
