Job Duties

The Security Officer is tasked with monitoring and make rounds to ensure the safety and security of VSU community members and facilities. Typical duties: lock and unlock University buildings, doors, and classrooms; provide visitors and University community members with information and directions to campus buildings, classrooms, and off-campus areas. Notify campus police of suspicious persons, activities, or safety hazards found during a tour of duty; maintain accurate records and logs of activity; operate security & state vehicles; respond to complaints and make preliminary investigations. Answer alarms and disturbances, contact police, fire, & rescue in case of an emergency, and follow established University emergency procedures. Patrol among visitors and University community members to preserve order and protect property. Patrol parking lots and issue warnings to persons with rule infractions or law violations and write tickets for parking violations. Perform other duties as assigned. Security Officers must be accountable for their actions and dependable in their attendance.


This is a classified full-time position.

Evening and night shifts are available with some flexibility in scheduling provided.

Minimum Qualifications

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities and/or Competencies required to successfully perform the work:

• The ability to project a positive image of the University and Department through positive attitude and appearance.

• Good oral and written communication skills.

• Ability to function mentally and physically under stress and in emergency situations.

• Good physical condition and an ability to withstand extensive walking during a tour of duty.

Additional Considerations

Three years of post-high school work experience is preferred.
