The University of Virginia is built on a district energy model managed by Energy and Utilities within Facilities Management, with one main heat plant, three combined heating/cooling plants, nine chiller plants, hundreds of miles of piping distribution, and an internal medium voltage electrical distribution grid anchored by three 35kV to 13kV substations. E&U serves over 18 million gross square feet of learning, research, residential, and support space across a geographically dispersed 1175 acres.

The University of Virginia’s Facilities Management - Utilities Distribution team is seeking a Senior Welder who will be part of a team responsible for the day-to-day operation, repair, and maintenance of UVA's infrastructure which includes 9 miles of steam and condensate, 7 miles of steam tunnel, 23 miles of heating water, 24 miles of chilled water, 41 miles of domestic water, 69 miles of stormwater, 26 miles of sanitary sewer and 5,000 structures, separators, inlets, and BMP’s.

The Senior Welder will provide technical support and perform welding and cutting on a variety of metals including carbon steel, stainless steel, copper, aluminum, and plastics such as HDPE, PE, and PVC.

Duties Include:
  • Repairing, maintaining, and installing steam, condensate, heating hot water, chilled water, domestic water, storm, sanitary sewer, vents, plumbing fixtures, gas, and similar systems; pipefitting;
  • Welding to ANSI/ASTM B31.1 X-ray standard for heating distribution piping and other applications;
  • Fabricating piping and structural supports;
  • General work on equipment or systems in plants, steam tunnels, and the utility infrastructure;
  • Anticipating job requirements and ordering materials;
  • Completing all welds to X-ray quality and drawing requirements;
  • Increasing familiarity of area equipment and piping systems of all buildings.
  • Notifying customers and supervisors of status of work and any complications, which will change the schedule.
  • Providing technical guidance and training to Welders and inspecting the quality of work. Maintaining accurate records of work.
  • Promoting responsibility and efficient work among team members by giving clear and descriptive instructions.
  • Fostering a safe work environment by instructing and monitoring compliance of OSHA, federal, state, and local regulations.
  • Responding to emergency calls and overtime requirements for various jobs.
  • In addition to the above job responsibilities, other duties may be assigned.


Qualifications:

Education:
  • High School diploma or equivalent.


Experience:
  • Seven [7] years of pipe welding experience required, with four [4] years of experience in plumbing or mechanical trades required.
  • Ability to read and interpret construction drawings and having a considerable understanding of various pipe distribution systems is essential.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of plasma cutting, cutting torches, soldering and silver soldering, as well as rigging pipe and associated materials to successfully complete projects is essential.
  • Ability to weld using GTAW, SMAW, GMAW processes.


Licensure:
  • Ability to pass ASME Section 9 B31.1 X-Ray welding test upon employment.
  • A valid driver's license is required.


Compensation:

The anticipated hiring range for this position is $29.00 - $33.00 per hour ($60,320 - $68,640 per year). Possibly eligible for Working Conditions Pay Differential of $2 per hour, when appropriate. Employees new to UVA are eligible for a sign-on bonus of $2,500 for a one-year commitment. This is a full-time position with UVA benefits . Employee benefits package highlights include:

For this position, the selected candidate will need to complete the required background checks prior to the start date of the position.

Physical Demands:

The employee must be able to variously sit, stand, walk, climb stairs and ladders, crawl, stoop, bend, squat, lift, pull, and use both hands-on repetitive tasks (including overhead tasks). The employee must have normal vision and hearing (correctable), and for some areas of employment, color vision and sense of smell.
