Job Duties

This position will manage the Department's forest habitat management program on DWR Wildlife Management Areas (WMAs). Duties will include coordination of a statewide WMA forest habitat management program, supervision of up to 2 Regional Forest Habitat Managers, engagement in statewide, regional and national forest initiatives; administration of the DWR timber sale process; forest management prescription assistance to the Regional Lands Managers; management of a statewide forest management database/inventory and annual SFI compliance requirements.

Minimum Qualifications

  • (Technical) Demonstrated management expertise over a range of forest habitats and conditions involving multiple land management functions or specialties; design and implement forest habitat management projects under general guidance; implement substantial design changes in a statewide forest habitat management plan; proficient management business operations and data management.
  • (Professional judgment and Decision Making) Make Forest habitat management recommendations based upon training, science and work experience affecting project outcomes and fiscal obligations.
  • (Planning and Coordination) Develop and prepare a statewide forest management plan coordinating multiple Agency resources (staff time and funding), with expectations to establish effective controls with minimal direction, demonstrate constant attention to detail and coordination at all administrative levels,
  • (Reasoning and Problem Solving). Make recommendations and decisions in resolving issues in data management, training needs, business models, and time management,
  • (Creativity and Innovation) Show diligence in creating solutions to problems and develop procedures to streamline protocols and policies that save staff time and Agency resources,
  • (Interpersonal Relations) Interact diplomatically with staff and the public on issues affecting forest habitat management projects, resolve conflict constructively with a high degree of sensitivity and understanding.
  • (Oral and Written Communications) Effective communications both orally and by writing position papers and reports (including progress reports for Federal Assistance) Develop IPR's, monthly work reports and timber sale administrative documents with attention to detail; coordinate with coworkers to achieve long-term forest habitat management objectives.
  • (Adaptability and Initiative) Adjust readily to new priorities, demonstrate vigilance in resolving difficult and log-term problems and show tolerance to stress and unforeseen circumstances.
  • (Organizational Support) Recognize and correct inefficient or unsafe practices; accurately relate agency mission and policies to customers; plan and organize multiple projects; analyze non­-routine situations and problems and develop practical action plans.

Additional Considerations

• Experience in meeting, developing, and implementing conservation planning goals.
• Motivated individual who is comfortable working independently under remote supervision.
