Job Duties

The Virginia School for the Deaf and the Blind is seeking a Teacher of the Deaf and Hard of Hearing for Science to provide classroom instruction for students who are deaf, hard of hearing, blind, visually impaired, deafblind, and other disabilities.

The Virginia School for the Deaf and the Blind (VSDB) is located in the historic, vibrant city of Staunton, Virginia. VSDB provides superior education for students who are deaf/hard of hearing, blind/vision impaired, deafblind, and deaf or blind with other disabilities.
VSDB offers PreK-12 education with both residential and day student options.

This is a 10-month, faculty position with state benefits, including health insurance, retirement, life insurance, and disability coverage.
The beginning date for this position is the beginning of our next school year in July 2024.
Responsibilities include:
* Curriculum/ Virginia Standards of Learning (SOL) management and planning
• Differentiated Instruction implementation
• Classroom organization and management
• Evaluation, reporting and recordkeeping
• Communication and professional/community relations
• Participation in staff development
• Development of Individualized Educational Programs (IEP)
• Develop and implement lesson plans according to grade level Standards of Learning with appropriate accommodations
• Monitor Student Progress through data collection
• Modify instruction based on analysis of student data and performance
* Ability to design and implement appropriate instruction for children with hearing loss
* Knowledge of child growth and development, and special needs of children with disabilities
* Ability to develop effective instructional strategies and methods and the ability to differentiate instruction to meet diverse student needs
* Minimum proficiency level of “Intermediate” in American Sign Language as measured by the Sign Language Proficiency Interview and agreement to acquire an “Advanced” level within three years of employment
* Ability to follow school policies and procedures and work using a team approach
* Knowledge of technology to enhance communication and learning
* Ability to assess and document student progress according to best practices, including but not limited to pre-test and post-test assessments, and to use assessment data to guide instruction

Minimum Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications:
* A minimum of a Baccalaureate Degree from a regionally accredited college or university.
* Hold or be eligible for a valid Virginia teaching license issued by the Board of Education with an endorsement in Special Education – Deaf and Hard of Hearing PreK-12. The selected candidate will also be required to obtain an additional endorsement in the applicable content area(s) within established deadlines.
OR
* Hold or be eligible for a valid Virginia Teaching License issued by the Board of Education endorsed in one of the Secondary Sciences, Biology, Chemistry, Physics or Earth Science. The selected candidate will be required to take courses toward an endorsement in Special Education – Deaf and Hard of Hearing PreK-12
*Current CPR and First Aid Certification required or must be obtained per school policies.
* Hold a valid Virginia Driver’s License and submit for review by DMV.
*Minimum proficiency level of “Intermediate” in American Sign Language as measured by the Sign Language Proficiency Interview and agreement to acquire an “Advanced” level within three years of employment

Additional Considerations

Preferred Qualifications:
* Experience in teaching in a classroom setting with special needs students who have sensory impairments is preferred.
* Ability to design and implement appropriate instruction for children with hearing loss
* Knowledge of child growth and development, and special needs of children with disabilities
* Ability to develop effective instructional strategies and methods and the ability to differentiate instruction to meet diverse student needs
* Ability to follow school policies and procedures and work using a team approach
* Knowledge of technology to enhance communication and learning
* Ability to assess and document student progress according to best practices, including but not limited to pre-test and post-test assessments, and to use assessment data to guide instruction.
* Ability to read and write professional reports and use relevant information to develop IEPs
* Ability to work collaboratively with teaching assistants and other school staff
