The Vice-Chair of Research will work directly as a practicing emergency medicine clinician and a member of the department leadership team with a primary focus on research productivity through quantifiable measures and means, internal/external funding opportunities from industry and government, pan-university collaborative research activities as well as peer-institutional and agency collaboration along with an understanding and appreciation of academic instruction and service activities with a focus on the clinical programs. While having a designated clinical coverage commitment, this position will include protected time to support scholarly pursuits based on a prior sustained record of achievement, retained and engaged funding and development engagements, and record of successful collaborative research and study activities. This position carries a faculty appointment in the University of Virginia School of Medicine on the clinical faculty or clinician educator track at the Assistant, Associate, or Professor level.

The Department of Emergency Medicine is led by Andrew E. Muck, MD, MBA, and includes adult care, pediatric care, and active air and ground transport programs. There is an established emergency medicine residency program and fellowships in Medical Toxicology, EMS, Cardiovascular Emergencies, Ultrasound, Research, Administration, Global Health, and Education. The UVA Health System is a 700-bed tertiary care and Level 1 trauma center with an annual ED census of 75,000 located at the foot of the Blue Ridge Mountains in Charlottesville, Virginia, a city that has been rated as one of the best places to live in the United States.

• Research - The research component will be the primary focus of this position and includes scholarly publication, attending academic conferences and obtaining grants. Some of the department’s more senior scholars have often take leadership roles in scholarly associations and act as editors, board members and referees for grant-giving organizations, academic presses and scholarly journals. External grant funding and federal agency level funding is expected and encouraged for this position and a support system exists to provide assistance in continuation of the grant and research funding.

• Clinical Activities – Faculty serve as attending physicians within the UVA emergency department. Completion of residency training in emergency medicine and board-eligibility/certification will be required. Preference given to those applicants who have completed additional fellowship training and board certifications.

• Teaching - Teaching encompasses all activities that directly facilitate student learning, including the contact hours spent in the classroom, office hours, class preparation, grading, answering student email, student advising, evaluating and making available course materials, facilitating e-learning and related duties.

• Service - University service involves membership in departmental, college-level and university committees, attending departmental meetings, student recruitment and processing routine paperwork such as filling out reports, answering email, participating in surveys and voting in university elections.

• In addition to the above job responsibilities, other duties may be assigned.

Qualifications

Qualified candidates must have an MD or DO and residency trained in Emergency Medicine. Applicants with specific fellowship training in research, administration, and/or a continued record of successful and continued NIH or other recognized agency level funded research accomplishment are encouraged to apply.

The successful candidate will have a proven track record or a significant potential for leadership and collaboration to promote the continued growth of the emergency medicine research program. This opportunity is for the EM Physician with a focused career of research with sustained engagement or potential to sustain engagement in clinical care, service and teaching with focused time allocated from the Department to support funded research pursuits
