We’re currently searching for a part-time embedded mental health counselor to join our team on the Roanoke campus to help us in our mission.
HERE'S WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW ABOUT THE ROLE: 1) You’ll be joining the Thomas E. Cook Counseling team as an embedded counselor on the Roanoke campus; a department committed to a spirit of excellence in providing timely and relevant university mental health services. 2) You’ll be reporting to the Assistant Director for Residential Well-being and Embedded counselors and will also coordinate with the Associate Vice President for Health Sciences and the Assistant Dean for Student Affairs on the Roanoke campus in a part time appointment. 3) You’ll provide brief, culturally competent counseling for individuals, groups, and couples with diverse clinical concerns while also maintaining full and accurate case notes. 4) You'll provide direct clinical and educational services to students while also providing consultation and training opportunities for the faculty, advisors and staff. 5) You'll provide direct clinical services to undergraduate and graduate students of the Roanoke campus to include initial consultation and assessment, individual and group counseling, psychiatric referrals, outreach, and consultations for faculty, staff, parents, and students. 6) You'll participate in additional activities such as participation in orientation for new students, faculty, and staff; educational programming in suicide prevention or the Community Resiliency Model (CRM); periodic wellness committee work; and attendance at department and college meetings. 7) You’ll work 2-3 days per week (to be determined) and be offered base compensation between $32.70 - $41.35.

Our culture is defined by a commitment to our Aspirations for Student Learning. 3) THE TEAM: The Cook Counseling Center provides mental health services to the student community of Virginia Tech. The embedded counselor works with a multidisciplinary staff of counselors, psychologists, psychiatrists, social workers, nurse practitioners, psychology interns, psychiatry residents, and practicum students to deliver services that maintain the highest standards of professional and ethical care. The center has a central location with embedded counselors on the Blacksburg campus, in our Roanoke facility, and at the Washington D.C. Metro-area campus. The center is accredited by the International Accreditation of Counseling Services (IACS) and has a doctoral internship training program accredited by the American Psychological Association (APA).
Required Qualifications • Master’s degree in counseling or social work plus two years of experience or a doctoral degree in clinical or counseling psychology, from an APA-approved program and be licensed as a licensed professional counselor, licensed clinical social worker or licensed clinical psychologist in the Commonwealth of Virginia. • Experience in providing focused therapeutic interventions within a multidisciplinary team • Training and experience in delivering culturally competent interventions • Experience with managing crisis situations, completing risk assessments, and disposition planning to address safety risks • Well-developed counseling and clinical supervision skills • A self-motivated, self-directed commitment to the highest ethical standards of professional practice • The energy to flexibly manage the professional demands of the role while maintaining positive and healthy relationships • Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively with colleagues with acceptance, respect, and trust • Excellent oral and written communication skills
Preferred Qualifications • Experience and interest in working with college-student/young adult population • Experience or interest in working with students from under-represented populations • Strong commitment to social justice and issues of diversity • Previous training and/or experience in a college mental health setting • Interest and/or experience collaborating with other departments or offices on multidisciplinary teams. • Experience in providing focused therapeutic interventions with a multidisciplinary team. • Experience in outreach and educational programming, e.g., suicide prevention gate-keeper programs.
