Longwood University invites applications for the Content Specialist (FA342) position in the department of Marketing and Communications. The primary purpose of this position is to provide logistical and creative support for digital marketing projects and campaigns within the Office of Marketing, Communications and Engagement (MCE), which includes the Office of Alumni and Career Success, and a priority focus on admissions. Working within the digital media team, the Content Specialist will play a critical and necessary role in a team that works collaboratively to engage audiences and positively position the university. To achieve this, the team targets varying stakeholders and audiences with engaging and purposeful content that matches the university's brand identity and voice. This position will be responsible for the final steps of the content process, including the compilation of and publishing of content deployed to the university's social media platforms.

This position is located in Farmville, Virginia, and is required to work in person on Longwood University's campus.

Essential Responsibilities and Duties:
  • Help manage flexible and robust content and communications calendars focusing on timeliness and meeting goals. Track content ideas throughout the content process and produce ready-to-post content on the university's social media platforms.
  • Manage a team of students (including paid student workers and unpaid interns) to assist with social content creation and social media listening for engagement, crowdsourced content and potential PR concerns. This includes the hiring, onboarding, project assignment and evaluation of students.
  • Contribute to the brainstorming and posting of admissions-focused content, ensuring that recruitment is a central message within the overall social strategy. This includes creating and managing the Class of 20XX Facebook groups and Instagram pages.
  • Similarly, develop content for the alumni-facing channels in collaboration with the Office of Alumni and Career Success team, social listen for posts from alumni to share on social media and engage with comments made in the group.
  • Utilize tools like Canva and Adobe Creative Suite to create elevated graphic design needs that meet brand standards for the Office of Marketing, Communications and Engagement, the Office of Alumni and Career Success and the Office of Admissions.
  • Stay up to date with emerging trends and best practices in social media content creation and distribution and continually assess and aid in improving the university's social media strategy, approach and presence.


Job Requirements:
  • Bachelor's degree in marketing, communications, public relations, graphic design, English or a similar field, or an equivalent combination of training or work experience.
  • Working familiarity with the content creation and distribution process, with a proven track record of executing successful content strategies.
  • Must have a working knowledge of major social media platforms (Facebook, Instagram, LinkedIn and YouTube) and a general awareness of other social media platforms (including X, Threads and Bluesky).
  • Experience using platforms like Canva and Adobe Creative Suite with a proven track record of developing elevated graphics.
  • Ability to work outside of regular business hours due to the nature of social media management and crisis communications.
  • Demonstrated excellent interpersonal, oral and written communication skills.
  • Ability to juggle multiple tasks and competing deadlines while maintaining accuracy and attention to detail.
  • Ability to routinely and independently exercise sound judgment when making decisions.
  • Willingness to solicit and consider constructive criticism.
  • Comfortable with technology and able to learn new tools with ease and comfort.
