Job Duties
Supports staff in reaching their optimum performance, as well as assisting staff in further developing their professional skills, including: • Communicates expectations of staff clearly and relates them to the goals and objectives of the department or unit. • Ensures staff has the necessary knowledge, skills, and abilities to accomplish goals. • Ensures that the requirements of the performance planning and evaluation system are met, and evaluations are completed by established deadlines with proper documentation. • Addresses and documents any performance, behavior, and attendance issues as they occur. • Ensures safety issues are reviewed and communicated to maintain a safe and healthy workplace resulting in a reduction in work related injuries. • Completes DBHDS MVP courses in the Knowledge Center within (1) year of their start date. • Ensures compliance with facility competencies and training requirements as documented by training/competency records. • Adheres to and ensures staff adherence to the DHRM Civility Policy. • Ensures staff members receive frequent, constructive feedback, recognition, including documented regular supervisory sessions and interim evaluations as appropriate and in keeping with the Hiram W. Davis Medical Center values • Ensures interdepartmental collaboration to support staff retention and satisfaction. • Practices progressive discipline • Assists in the development of staffing patterns appropriate to the delivery of care for assigned departments Direct the dental department and provides dental treatments • Directs and provides dental treatment to individuals of CSH, HWDMC and those referred from other DBHDS facilities as well as those Intellectual Disability patients from the community. • Provides all phases of general dentistry at or above the standard of care. • Provides dental awareness to patients • Develops strategic plans and department goals for the future i.e. establishing and maintaining a relationship with VCU School of Dentistry and/or private sector for consultations/treatment of difficult cases/peer review as needed and incorporating community services to the department mission. • Keeps complete and accurate dental records with good documentation. • Ensures adequate follows-up and continuity of care • Assigns and evaluates the work of the dental team • Ensures the completion of required narrative, statical, and fiscal reports and responsibilities. • Establishes practice standards for the dental staff • Ensures that departmental policies and procedures are being carried out by the dental team • Works collaboratively with the Medical staff in clinical matter of concerns. • Develops process to improve dental hygiene care. • Submit dental discharge summaries timely. Administrative Duties: • Provides supervision of the dental department, i.e. administrative and operational fundtions to achieve high quality patient care delivery, assessing work performance, and assuring the full integration of that department into the lcinical work of the medical center. • Implementation of dentist review involving disciplinary actions, peer review, assessing staff competencies and evaluating work performance. • Development and revision of work procedures to expedite improved levels of delivery of services to patients. • Manages the budgets of the dental department • Responsible for recruitment, selection and orientation of dental staff. • Application of the Standards of Conduct when necessary • Serves as a professional role model for the dental staff • Participates in department head meetings • Uses resources efficiently to achieve department/facility objectives Formulates dental program policies: For those patients receiving dental treatment under general anesthesia and conscious sedation, responsibilities include: • Timely submission of patient schedule • Acceptable performance in writing pre-op orders • Ensures record of treatment, discharge/transfer orders and consultation with attending physicians (as needed) are completed • Ensures dental surgical case review form is completed after each treatment • Ensures AR is informed if treatment is cancelled Provides dental treatment to patients under IV sedation and general anesthesia
Enforcement of Infection Control/SSHA Standards: • Responsible for the development and implementation of Infection Control/OSHA as it pertains to dental practice • Ensures that all dental sites receive specific OSHA training/updates Cultural Diversity: • Encourages staff to respect cultural differences amongst coworkers and individuals served. Is proactive in seeking the personal knowledge, skills and abilities necessary to build cross cultural teams and address cross cultural conflict. Ensures that staff understand the importance of using interpreters who are trained and tested for proficiency.
Minimum Qualifications
• Requires graduation from an accredited school of dentistry; possession of a valid D.D.S. degree, current Virginia license, DEA license. • Thorough knowledge of the principles and practices of all aspects of general dentistry. Comprehensive skills and ability to apply modern methods and practices of four-handed dentistry and oral surgery essential. • Individual in this position must have creativity; resourcefulness and judgement in the analysis and solution of dental and administrative problems; strong leadership, teamwork, and crisis management skills are essential. • Must be willing to be flexible in addressing the myriads of issues related to supporting the mentally ill and developmentally disable population. • Current CPR Certification. • Knowledge of standard of care and updates in clinical dentistry i.e. principles, and practices of dental management, preventive, corrective dentistry and oral hygiene. • Ability to diagnose and treat dental deficiencies. • Ability to communicate effectively and maintain accurate records. • Knowledge of SSHA and Infection Control requirements. • Knowledge of management process and clinic operations • Knowledge of HIPAA and Confidentiality policies • Knowledge of dental law • Ability to relate to individuals who reside at CSH and HWDMC
Additional Considerations
Dental experience as a clinician supplemented with administrative experience in a clinic setting strongly preferred.
