Job Duties

Are you someone driven by innovation, with a passion for design? We are looking for professionals with Materials Engineering interest, who can support the Virginia Department of Transportation in constructing new roadway designs to keep Virginia safe and moving!

Virginia Department of Transportation’s (VDOT) Richmond District is looking for an Engineer Specialist Supervisor to provide technical support to assigned engineering program area through coordinating and supervising activities of subordinate staff.

This position will supervise the Materials Documentation Program to ensure that all materials used in Design-Bid-Build, Design-Build/P3, or LAP Projects meet VDOT specifications and standards. Ensure that project documentation is complete, accurate and meets VDOT and FHWA requirements.

Minimum Qualifications

• Knowledge of materials acceptance programs and requirements
• Considerable knowledge of quality control, quality assurance concepts and practices.
• Ability to collect, organize, analyze, and maintain data.
• Skill in mathematical calculations, apply statistical concepts in sampling and testing of materials
• Knowledge of supervisory and human resources practices and principles including hiring, discipline, performance management and employee development.
• Considerable knowledge of plant and field quality assurance sampling and testing methods, frequencies, and procedures.
• Considerable knowledge of highway construction and maintenance materials.
• Ability to prepare and review technical reports.
• Skill in interpreting plans, drawings, manuals, VTM/ASTM/AASHTO test methods, and VDOT specifications.
• Ability to work independently, in teams, including industry and management.

Additional Considerations

• Experience supervising administrative and professional staff and managing performance.
• A combination of training, experience or education in Civil Engineering Technology or related field desired
• Experience in materials quality control and quality assurance practices.
• Experience in materials testing or construction.
