The Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) is responsible for building, maintaining, and operating the state’s roads, bridges, tunnels, and ferries. Through the Commonwealth Transportation Board, it also provides funding for airports, rail, and public transportation. The Salem District maintains more than 9,200 miles of roads in southwestern Virginia in the counties of: Bedford, Botetourt, Carroll, Craig, Floyd, Franklin, Giles, Henry, Montgomery, Patrick, Pulaski, and Roanoke. The district serves more than 650,000 citizens in these counties and the 14 cities and towns in its boundaries.
Job Duties
VDOT's Christiansburg Work Order Crew is seeking a qualified Maintenance Operator to join their team. As the qualified candidate you will:
● Determine and demonstrate proper work site protection techniques. ● Participate as a working member of the crew to complete projects and accomplish objectives. ● Perform manual labor and other maintenance tasks to complete assigned work. ● Use a variety of hand and power tools to completed assigned tasks ● Install, maintain and remove traffic control devices for work zones, detours, lane closures, etc., in assigned areas using the MUTCD. Assist in tracking inventory and maintaining records ● Operate and maintain light, medium and heavy-duty highway equipment and vehicles to perform maintenance and construction related work tasks. ● Perform maintenance repair, replacement and preventive maintenance. Complete pre-trip inspections for any vehicle or equipment operated. ● Prepare and operate equipment for snow and ice removal or other types of emergency operations. Clear roadways of snow, ice and debris, and clean up after accidents. ● Provide traffic control.
Minimum Qualifications
• Ability to perform heavy manual labor. • Skill in the operation and maintenance of hand and power tools. • Safety shoes required. • Ability to obtain CDL and DOT medical card within 11 months of employment and maintain thereafter. Must comply with DOT and VDOT policies and standards when operating CDL equipment. • Ability to read and follow oral and written instructions. • Skill in the operation and maintenance of light, medium, and heavy duty equipment used for highway maintenance and repair. • Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing. • Knowledge of highway maintenance equipment, materials, methods, and procedures.
Additional Considerations
• Experience in emergency operations to include snow removal, storms and accident clean-up. • Experience performing preventive maintenance and minor equipment repairs. • A combination of training, experience, or education in Maintenance, Vehicle Operations or related field desired. • Experience in roadway maintenance and construction. • Valid Commercial Drivers License with appropriate endorsements.

This position is designated as essential and, as such, all duties associated with the job are required during emergency situations which may include but are not limited to inclement weather, disaster response, and emergency operations. Performance of these duties may require work outside of normal business hours including nights, weekends and holidays. VDOT will determine when essential positions are required to report.

VDOT utilizes a market based pay program, which has been approved by DHRM. Therefore, advertised rates of pay may or may not align with the Commonwealth pay bands.

NOTE: All drivers hired without a valid CDL in hand are required to obtain their CDL within 11 months of their hire date. You cannot operate commercial motor vehicles prior to receiving the necessary licensure and medical certification. Effective February 7, 2022, new Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) regulations require entry-level drivers (drivers who are seeking to take the skills test in order to obtain a CDL for the first time, upgrade their CDL to a Class A from a Class B, or take the knowledge test to obtain a hazardous materials endorsement for the first time) to complete FMCSA- approved Entry-Level Driving (ELD) Training before the Department of Motor Vehicles can grant the requested CDL or endorsement. The course is comprised of 160 hours, on average, of training. VDOT does provide assistance with your enrollment in and payment of the ELD Training.
