Job Duties

VDOT is driven by safety, service to the community, and commitment to excellence! If you are driven by innovation and passion for infrastructure, we want you to join our team to keep Virginia moving. VDOT's Culpeper District is seeking a Maintenance Operator for the Yancey Mills Area Headquarters. As an Operator, you will use our foundational drivers to play a crucial role in shaping the highways that connect communities and drive progress across the Commonwealth of Virginia.

As an operator, you will:
*Work as part of a team clearing drainage, removing debris, cutting brush, and roadway maintenance. Tasks include installing culvert pipes, grading gravel roads, hauling gravel and debris, rolling patching, and other manual labor duties needed to maintain Virginia’s roads.

*Operate equipment such as, but not limited to, dump trucks, backhoes, graders, tar kettles, rollers, loaders, mowing tractors, etc. For each piece of equipment operated, you will complete a pre-trip/post-trip inspection and maintain equipment for readiness.

*Use hand and power tools and perform manual labor tasks.

*Respond to emergencies blocking roads, such as traffic accidents and debris, to provide traffic control and perform activities to reopen the road. During severe weather, you will prepare for, and operate equipment to remove snow and ice, along with working in other types of hazardous weather affecting road conditions. Emergency response will require work outside of normal business hours, including nights, weekends, and holidays.

*Set up work zones and perform traffic control, focusing on proper worksite protection. Safety is our number one focus, so you are encouraged to identify workplace safety hazards and make recommendations for improvements.

Minimum Qualifications

*Experience in roadway maintenance or construction or knowledge of materials, methods, and procedures used in roadway maintenance or construction.
*Experience in operating equipment such as dump trucks, loaders, graders, backhoes, etc.
*Able to read and follow oral and written instructions
*Able to perform heavy manual labor, including frequent lifting up to 50 pounds
*Skilled in using hand and power tools
*Valid driver’s license required at hire. A Commercial Driver’s License and DOT medical card are required within 11 months of employment and maintained thereafter.

Additional Considerations

*Current CDL (Class A or B) with appropriate endorsements.
*Experience performing preventive maintenance and minor equipment repairs
*Experience in emergency operations including snow removal, storm and accident response, and clean-up.

Special Instructions

You will be provided a confirmation of receipt when your application and/or résumé is submitted successfully. Please refer to “Your Application” in your account to check the status of your application for this position.

Position requires unrestricted mobility, working in all types of weather, and terrain, and standing for long periods. Must be able to lift up to 50 pounds. Requires approved safety shoes, which is a reimbursable expense.

All drivers hired without a valid CDL in hand are required to obtain their CDL within 11 months of their hire date. You cannot operate commercial motor vehicles before receiving the necessary licensure and medical certification. Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) regulations require entry-level drivers (drivers who are seeking to take the skills test to obtain a CDL for the first time, upgrade their CDL to a Class A from a Class B, or take the knowledge test to obtain a hazardous materials endorsement for the first time) to complete FMCSA- approved Entry-Level Driving (ELD) Training before the Department of Motor Vehicles can grant the requested CDL or endorsement. The course is comprised of 160 hours, on average, of training. VDOT is willing to assist with your enrollment and payment for the course upon your acceptance of an ELD Training Tuition tenure and repayment agreement.

Fingerprint-based background checks, references, work history, and DMV records will be verified before employment. Selected applicants holding a valid CDL must complete a pre-employment physical and drug screen, otherwise, applicants will be required to complete a pre-employment physical. Applicants must be eligible to work in the United States. H1B VISA Sponsorship is not available. VDOT utilizes a market-based pay program, which has been approved by DHRM. Therefore, advertised rates of pay may or may not align with the Commonwealth pay bands.

State applications will only be accepted as submitted online by 11:55 pm on the closing date through the Page Up System. State applications submitted via email, postal mail, fax, or in person will not be considered. Applicants are expected to fully represent their qualifications and work history on the State application and/or resume. The decision to interview an applicant is based on the information provided on the application, therefore, it is essential to fully complete each section of the application and provide detailed information. Submitting an incomplete state application, or a state application lacking in detail, may impact your interview eligibility.

In addition to a rewarding work experience, VDOT offers excellent health and life insurance, benefits, pre-tax spending accounts, state funded Short- and Long-Term Disability, paid holidays, vacation, tuition assistance, free wellness programs, and a state retirement plan with options for tax-deferred retirement savings including employer matching.
