The Virginia Department of Health (VDH) is dedicated to protecting and promoting Virginia's health. It is made up of a statewide central office in Richmond and 32 local health districts.

As part of the Virginia Department of Health, Hampton and Peninsula Health Districts (HPHD) are two health districts serving the residents of the Cities of Hampton, Newport News, Poquoson, Williamsburg, and the Counties of James City and York.

These Community Health and Clinic Service positions independently provide professional nursing care to patients in clinics, homes and schools and other community or congregate care settings. Performs nursing assessments, may perform lab tests, take measurements, develop and implement care plans, including the administration of medication and case management. Participates in public health emergencies and community health assessments. Actions performed at this level require licensure as a RN by state code. May supervise support staff.

Community Health

Community Health Nurses primary focus is on promoting health, preventing disease, and improving the overall well-being of the community they serve. Our nurses do this by conducting in home screenings for long term services and supports, providing education and outreach for our maternal child health program, serving clients in the newcomer health program, and assisting individuals in our refugee, TB Control and Communicable Disease Programs.

Clinic Services

Clinic Nurses provide a range of services aimed at promoting and protecting the health of the community. These services often include. Health Assessments and Screenings, Immunizations, Health Education and Counseling, Maternal and Child Health Services, Infectious Disease Control, Community Outreach, Emergency Preparedness and Response to provide support and care during public health emergencies.

The Virginia Department of Health (VDH) requires all Health Care Personnel (HCP) to provide documentation of immunizations or evidence of immunity for the following diseases: hepatitis B, measles, mumps, rubella, and varicella. Additionally, a one-time dose of the tetanus, diphtheria, and pertussis (Tdap) vaccine is required, regardless of the time since the last tetanus-diphtheria (Td) vaccination was administered. Tetanus-diphtheria (Td or Tdap) boosters should be received every 10 years. HCPs must also receive the current year's seasonal influenza vaccination.

The successful candidate may receive a one-time lump sum of annual leave

Minimum Qualifications

• Communicates verbally and in writing, to analyze problems, situations and suggest solutions, leadership, follow directions and establish priorities
• Skills in physical examination, health assessment, and interviewing and counseling technique
• Ability to function independently, prioritize and organize work, solve problems, adapt to change, function as a team member and relate to the public
• Knowledge of public health concepts, principles of public health nursing, principles of epidemiology; immunizations; basic nursing science, medical terminology, case management
• May travel and some weekend and/or evening hours may be required
• Must be certified in Basic Life Support (BLS)/CPR

Additional Considerations

• Additional study in health promotion/or public health is preferred
• Experience in a public health setting or one related to disease prevention and health promotion
