Job Duties

Psychological Assessment/Evaluation:
• Conducts psychological evaluations and assessments for designated patients to aid in treatment planning, diagnosis and court-related evaluations. Includes review of patient records; clinical interviews; selection, administration, scoring and interpretation of appropriate objective and projective psychological and neuropsychological tests; effective communication of findings and recommendations via written and oral reports.

Psychotherapy, psychoeducation, & psychological services:
• Provides psychotherapy and psychoeducation in individual, group and family sessions for patients as needed to maximize patients’ psychological functioning and promote personal growth and development in support of patient safety and recovery; selects treatment modalities and techniques according to patient needs and treatment goals and completes required documentation in patient records.
• Provides crisis intervention for patients on an as-needed basis in order to de-escalate potentially life-threatening situations and provides intervention as needed for patients to prevent safety problems, including suicide and aggression risk reduction strategies.
• Provides individual counseling and education to patients admitted under a forensic status to prepare for evaluation of competency and sanity at the time of offense.
• Provides education and counseling to individuals determined by the courts to be not guilty by reason of insanity regarding the graduated release process for NGRI acquittees.

Consultation: Develops implements and evaluates behavior management guidelines and provides relevant training for hospital staff.
•Participates in milieu planning, consults with treatment teams on specific behavioral interventions for individual patients and consults with nursing staff on unit-wide behavioral recommendations.
•Provides other consultation and education as needed throughout the hospital on matters such as diagnostic and treatment issues and available psychological services.

\ Treatment team Participation:
•Participates actively with multi-disciplinary treatment teams as assigned by providing psychological input, assisting with team leadership, authoring treatment plans based upon team discussion, and formulating behavioral guidelines/plans for patients as needed. •Proactively provides a service to colleagues, including provision of salient clinical recommendations to help improve assessment and treatment, as well as effective and efficient discharge planning
•Cross-covers colleagues as needed

Minimum Qualifications

• A Masters in Psychology from an accredited institution (PhD is preferred)
•Ability to conduct and integrate psychological assessments and treatments.
•Ability to plan and provide clinically sound and timely diagnosis and interventions.
•Active facilitator of treatment team process.
•Competency as a coach or trainer
•Ability to generate comprehensive written and verbal presentations for case conceptualizations, individualized interventions, and treatment plans.
•Competency in behavioral assessment and interventions, or any other specified approaches/techniques mandated by the DMH
•Demonstrates competencies as defined on Competency Assessment

Additional Considerations

Safety: All employees are responsible for ensuring patient safety in accordance with the National Patient Safety Goals. Safety risks include any activity or behavior that could be perceived as potentially harmful, such as, but not limited to suicide, aggression, homicide, falls and elopement. If a patient is in imminent danger, staff must remain with the patient until assistance can be provided. If there is a concern about a patient’s condition worsening, the charge nurse on the patient’s unit is the primary contact person to ask for immediate additional assistance.
•Reports unsafe work situations to the appropriate department/discipline.
•Follows guidelines of department/hospital policies that involve safety issues.

Interpersonal Skills: Understands that the hospital has “zero tolerance” for disruptive and inappropriate behaviors and adheres to the “Code of Conduct” as defined by the hospital and outlined in the State’s “Standards of Conduct” policy, 1.60

•Uses appropriate lines of communication and resources within the system to facilitate change and resolve problems.
•Uses appropriate conflict management techniques and resources to resolve problems with co-workers in a timely manner.

•Uses appropriate interactions and effective communication skills to facilitate positive patient outcomes.
•Demonstrates customer service and supports a culture of service with co-workers, colleagues, community stakeholders, patients, and families.
