Job Duties

Central State Hospital (CSH) is a 277 bed Joint Commission accredited psychiatric inpatient facility located in Petersburg, Virginia. CSH has proudly been serving citizens of the Commonwealth since 1870, when we opened our doors as the first psychiatric hospital in the country dedicated to the treatment of African Americans. A new and modern CSH is currently under construction on the same property, with a scheduled completion date of 2027.

CSH maintains the only maximum-security treatment facility in the state (111 beds). We also have 166 beds available for individuals in the community who need inpatient care, as well as individuals in the criminal justice system. We believe that treatment should be holistic and focused on the person’s individual needs, recognizing that recovery is not linear or the same for every person. Treatment modalities may include medication, evidence-based group and individual therapy, peer support, psychosocial rehabilitation, vocational training, preparation for court, and treatment for substance use.

Central State Hospital (CSH), a State of Virginia mental health hospital located near Petersburg, VA, is recruiting for a Trades Technician II (Driver/ Helpers-Installation Maintenance & Repair Worker).

This position, serving the entire Southside Complex which consists of Central State Hospital & Hiram W. Davis Medical Center will provide transportation services for patients, staff, goods, and equipment as directed. This position will both perform general maintenance (non-technical) independently and provide assistance to (licensed trade technicians) as necessary. Duties shall include but not limited to grounds work, plumbing, painting, carpentry, cleaning, moving materials, furniture, etc. Provide cleaning and preventative maintenance to State vehicles.

The incumbent will be responsible for carrying and responding to calls on a State issued cell phone. As an essential personnel staff shall serve on call 24/7 as a member of the grounds crew for storm response, snow and ice treatments and removal. This position is subject to mandatory overtime for all types of storm response, including ice and snow pretreatment and removal for CSH.

- Experience of the maintenance of vehicles and associated safety practices.
- Knowledge of a State driving laws and the use of road maps to transport patients in a safe
and timely manner.
- Ability to work various shifts during emergencies and/or agency needs.
- Ability to work using a team approach.
- Ability to follow State policies and procedures.
- Ability to lift up to 40 pounds.
- Ability to perform repetitive motion to include standing, sitting, reaching, lifting, walking,
bending, climbing ladders, and scaffolding of all types.
- Ability to work with various chemicals and during all weather conditions.

Minimum Qualifications

- Valid Virginia Driver's License
