About the Department:
The primary purpose/objective/mission of the University Police Department is to provide a safe and secure environment for all university employees, students, and visitors. Embracing the principles of community policing, the department works collaboratively with academic and administrative units, individuals, and organizations in furtherance of the mission of the University. The department delivers a comprehensive program in law enforcement to provide the highest level of safety, security, and service for the students, faculty, staff, and visitors to the university, as they pursue their daily work and study activities, consistent with the laws of the Commonwealth and the policies of the University.
About the Position:
The primary purpose or objective of a Crime and Intelligence Analyst is to support the Threat Assessment Unit within the George Mason University Police Department. This role requires the knowledge and ability to research, extract, and analyze law enforcement and open-source data to identify and interpret criminal activity, concerning behaviors, assessment of campus events, and forecast trends while maintaining department standards. This is a part-time non-benefited wage position, and considered at-will employment. The position is designated as non-essential personnel and may require work during non-business hours, holidays, or weekends during emergency situations.
Responsibilities:
Research, extract, and analyze law enforcement data along with open-source data to identify and interpret criminal activity and forecast trends;
Provide timely and relevant information on crime patterns and trends to assist operational and administrative personnel in planning the deployment of resources for the prevention and suppression of criminal activities and threats to events on campus;
Present analyses to various audiences within the Police Department in effective formats, including maps, graphs, and reports, while identifying opportunities for proactive problem solving and evidence-based policing in support of department goals;
Assist in the preparation of persons of concern backgrounds using law enforcement databases and open-source research;
Generate intelligence products and bulletins that are shared within the department, as well as local, State, and Federal law enforcement agencies; and
Assess risk of campus events using open-source intelligence while coordinating with law enforcement and university personnel.
Required Qualifications:
Must have at least a high school diploma or equivalent;
Must have considerable experience (generally 5 years) working and coordinating with local, State, and Federal law enforcement;
Must have considerable experience (generally 5 years) understanding the analytical framework and performing analytical intelligence work;
Ability to obtain and maintain NCIC/VCIN certification and meet associated requirements;
Ability to provide comprehensive presentations (both oral and written) to support the Threat Assessment Unit within the Police Department;
Must be able to read, comprehend, and communicate verbally and in writing in the English language;
Must have excellent oral and written reporting skills, interpersonal skills, and the ability to communicate verbally and in writing in a professional, organized manner at all levels of the department and university;
Demonstrated experience in the operation of computers to include Windows and varied software applications;
Ability to self-start projects and possess independent decision-making skills;
Ability to apply experience and judgment in selecting procedures to be followed in searching, interpreting, and selecting information to be entered into various databases and systems from a variety of document sources;
Ability to effectively summarize information in writing in a style appropriate for the job;
Must possess the skill and ability to analyze, summarize, report, and share information;
Demonstrated experience maintaining confidentiality and integrity of sensitive information and records while completing assigned tasks;
Ability to understand and follow complex written and oral instructions and effectively apply proper technical solutions, policies, procedures, and guidelines with attention to detail;
Ability to pass rigid background check including a polygraph and psychological assessment;
Ability to be compliant with Virginia State Police/FBI/Criminal Justice Information Services (CJIS) policies;
No illegal or illicit drug use within the past two years;
No felony convictions, convictions of misdemeanors involving crimes of moral turpitude or gross misconduct, or found not guilty by reason of mental illness for any crime;
No criminal or unethical behavior unsuitable or inappropriate for a position of trust as determined by the appointing authority;
Must not have any record of untruthfulness, falsification, or intentional withholding of information on any application, certificate, credential, interview, test, or documents/records associated with a position of trust; and
Must currently possess an appropriate, active, valid motor vehicle operator’s license that meets all of GMU’s requirements for operating state vehicles and equipment under Mason’s Vehicle Use Policy 1411 https://universitypolicy.gmu.edu/policies/vehicle-use/. The Office of Risk Management reserves the right to review the driver’s licenses and Motor Vehicle Reports (MVRs) of all candidates selected with employment contingent upon favorable review.
Preferred Qualifications:
Associate’s degree or equivalent training and experience; and
Experience working in a law enforcement agency in a university or higher education setting.
