Job Duties

We are looking for construction workers to drive, improve and maintain infrastructure for the Virginia Department of Transportation.

VDOT’s Richmond District Construction Program is seeking a Construction Inspector to monitor and inspect roadway, structure, and bridge construction projects of routine to moderate complexity. Responsibilities include inspect all phases of highway construction and maintenance projects under the general supervision of senior or supervisory staff, ensuring construction quality in accordance with plans and specifications and providing a quality transportation system for the traveling public. Opportunities are available in our Northern (Hanover, Goochland, New Kent, Charles City, Henrico and City of Richmond), Southern (Petersburg and South Hill) Region and in our Richmond District Location in Colonial Heights.

Minimum Qualifications

• Knowledge of mathematics to include, algebra, geometry and trigonometry.
• Valid Driver’s license
• Skill in the use of computers and software applications
• Skill in the use of engineering and testing equipment, inspection methods and materials testing.
• Safety shoes required.
• Ability to read, interpret and analyze roadway, structure and bridge plans, specifications, and contract documents.
• Experience in construction, civil engineering, project management or materials inspection.
• Possession of or ability to obtain required certifications within 12 months of employment.
• Ability to maintain detailed records, prepare reports and maintain project files.
• Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing with VDOT and contractor personnel and general public.

Additional Considerations

• Knowledge of roadway, structure and bridge construction methods, materials, standards and terminology.
• Ability to apply mathematical formulas and engineering principles to determine minor adjustments to construction plans.
• A combination of training, experience, or education in engineering, drafting or related field.
• Knowledge of state and federal safety, environmental and equal employment opportunity guidelines, and regulations as they relate to transportation construction projects.
• Possession of current certifications and completion of fall protection and confined spaces training desired.
• Experience in highway and bridge construction inspection with a DOT or consultant inspection firm.
• Experience in construction, civil engineering, project management or materials inspection.
• A combination of training, experience or education in Engineering, drafting, or related field desired.
